Life is Like a Box Of Chocolates……

Last weekend saw another Bond film and another cinema box office record smashed!  The previous record, held by Mr. Potter, sat at a considerable £14,933,901; showing how powerful a family movie can be in today’s society.  Marc Forster’s latest spy instalment again reinforces where the money is - proving cinema, and film more generally, is still a force to be reckoned with, with opening weekend box office of £15,384,217.

So, with cinema proving its worth, its no surprise we see so many “top-film” lists.  Most notable of which was Empire magazine’s recently conducted survey, which featured the top 500 films of all time.  With this in mind, I think its important we have our say on which films should make a top-10 list.  So, over the next few weeks I’ll be asking for your opinions on films over the past 30 years - starting with this week’s “the top films of the 1990s”.

Please send your top 10 (in order, 1 = best) to Matthew.waghorn@bjke.co.uk by Friday 7th lunchtime!

So, the results are in.  485* votes checked and verified (*Some films were excluded as they were not released 1990-1999).  The great debate may never be settled but at least we now have the collective view of BJK&E, together with some invited guests from such fine film authorities as Empire magazine, Carlton Screen advertising, and Lovefilm to name a few.

So without further ado, here’s are the top 10 films of the 1990s as voted by you:

1) Pulp Fiction (1994)
2) Goodfellas (1990)
3) The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

  4. 1er Says:

Sack off Western movies, they’re all the same..

There were some cult classics in the nineites with Tarantino contributing alot. Why can’t he make a good movie these days?

  5. barney sluggo Says:

  7. MZA Says:

Western movies are not all the same. You’ve got classic westerns, spagetti westerns and acid westerns to name a few. Simply dropping the western genre would be criminal - you might as well drop top 10 sci -fi as without the the western - there wouldn’t be a Star Wars trilogy - Its that simple.

  8. Bindi Says:

    After alot of thought….

    1. Usual Suspects
    2. Silence of the Lambs
    3. Lion King
    4. Ghost

    7.There’s something about Mary
    8. Hot Shots
    9. Jerry Maguire
    10. Thomas Crown Affair

and some that came close….Cool Runnings, Talented Mr Ripley, Fight Club, Clueless, Back to the Future III….

  9. Avid Fan Says:

Been a massive film junkie, I have major a issue with lists like these. The issue been what is the criteria for the best movie? Is it personal fav perhaps? A guilty pleasure that puts a smile on your face? An Oscar winner could be deemded a robust gauge (but not really- Forrest Gump anyone?), box office success, critical acclaim etc?

Anyway, it didn’t stop me from including my own list did it..

  10. Emu Says:

Um, guys.. what about The People Vs Larry Flynt?

  11. 1er Says:

I’ll add to that list with:

    WHOPPER

  12. MZA Says:

Goin back to Avid Fans comment about hating lists like these. It’s worth noting that when you are trying to get a top 10 list with so much criteria (ie every movie made over a decade). It’s the scoring system that really makes the difference. By giving films a point for apearing in the list you are simply finding the one movie that is in everyones top ten (in this case Pulp Fiction). If anything this list is a massive nostalgia trip for all movie fans. I reckon that the next list should be a genre top ten in which every film gets 10 points for top 1 point for 10. By having a specific genre (havin just watched Jesse James, can we please do the western!!) It means the scoring syetm will give a much more definitive result.

Also can I submit WILBUR for top ten Patrick Lindon names.

  13. Peanut Says:
